Chemistry Nobel Award Honors 3 Researchers for Innovative Work on Framework Materials

The prestigious award in Chemistry is given to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M Yaghi for their seminal contributions on MOFs.

The scientists' investigations may help address numerous major global issues, such as CO2 capture to address climate change or minimizing synthetic debris through advanced chemical processes.

“It’s a profound honor and pleasure, thank you,” remarked Professor Kitagawa in a phone call to the news conference after learning the announcement.
“What’s the duration I need to remain? I have an appointment to attend,” Professor Kitagawa added.

These three winners are splitting monetary reward of 11 million Swedish kronor (£872,000).

Structural Design at the Core of the Breakthrough

Their researchers' research centers around how molecular units can be assembled collectively into elaborate structures. Award organizers referred to it as “structural molecular engineering”.

These professors formulated techniques to build structures with considerable voids between the components, permitting gases and other chemicals to pass through them.

These materials are called metal-organic materials.

This reveal was delivered by the academic institution at a media briefing in Stockholm, Sweden.

Prof. Kitagawa works at Kyoto University in the Asian nation, Richard Robson is at the Melbourne University in the Australian continent, and Omar Yaghi resides at the University of California in the US.

Previous Award Laureates in Science Fields

During the prior award cycle, Demis Hassabis, John Jumper, and David Baker received the prize for their research on proteins, which are essential building blocks of biological systems.

It is the third scientific award given recently. On Tuesday, three physicists earned the physics award for their work on quantum theory that enabled the creation of the quantum computing system.

On Monday, 3 scientists investigations on how the biological immunity targets harmful microbes secured them the honor for medical science.

A single winner, Fred Ramsdell, did not receive the notification for a full day because he was on an remote trek.
