Trans documentarian Sam Feder's recent documentary "Increased Examination" offers a powerful dual viewpoint – simultaneously an intimate portrait of a key trans activist and a critical analysis of journalistic coverage about transgender existence.

Judicial Battle at the Supreme Court

This documentary follows ACLU attorney Chase Strangio as he gears up for oral arguments in the significant highest court case US v Skirmetti. These proceedings occurred in late 2024, with the judiciary finally deciding in support of the state's position, effectively permitting restrictions on healthcare for transgender minors to remain in place across numerous US states.

We created Heightened Scrutiny in just 16 months, shared Feder during a discussion. By contrast, my earlier film Disclosure took me five years, so this was quite rushed. Our purpose was to generate dialogue so people would know more about the case.

Human Narrative Amid Political Struggle

Although Feder presents a extensive examination of how prominent publications have promoted anti-trans talking points, the film's greatest achievement may be its compelling portrayal of Strangio. Normally a cautious lawyer in public appearances, Strangio displays his authenticity throughout the production.

I create films with a message, and part of that is choosing people who are outstanding and concise enough to hold the camera, stated Feder. Whenever people ask me what they should dress for an interview, my answer is anything that makes you feel confident. That is important to me – as transgender individuals, we struggle so much with our appearance.

A key factor that causes Feder's films shine is his obvious talent for making his trans participants feel comfortable, acknowledged and valued. This methodology creates authentic rapport between Feder and Strangio, enabling the director to achieve his goal of portraying Strangio as a whole human being and providing a document for coming generations of how resiliently he and others have struggled for transgender liberties.

I don't want people to end up in a situation of perpetual hopelessness because of what the law is failing to provide us, explained Strangio. I want to be in a practice of using the law to lessen harm, but not to make it some type of conduit for our liberation possibilities.
