No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in rail accident in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid speed, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national undertakings.
